I guess it helps to stand up for yourself and speak out. I posted my blog about my issue with TELUS earlier this afternoon, shortly after I sent an email about the situation to the CEO & President of TELUS, OpenMedia.ca, the telecom reporter at the Globe & Mail, and to Marketplace at the CBC. Interestingly enough just a few short minutes ago I received a phone call from a TELUS representative, who was quite nice and easy to speak with and extremely apologetic about the craziness of the situation. TELUS is recalling our account from collection and we no longer owe them any money at all. :)
I have to say, it is nice to be heard. It is unfortunate that it had to escalate to such an extent but sometimes the squeaky wheel does get greased. I still stand by my final comments about TELUS - I will never return to them as a service provider but at least, in resolution to this particular issue they have shown that there is a slight possibility that they might be friendly in the future.

TELUS SUCKS!!!!!
I have just spent the morning composing a letter to send the CEO and President of TELUS, one that will be forwarded to all the Board members and to a number of papers and consumer watchdogs. To say that I am disgruntled with TELUS' treatment of me is an understatement. I'm PISSED OFF. Just sayin'. So, here's the scoop, and some of you may have read about this on my FB page - I'm sure there will be a lot more of it, so if you don't want to read this - it's all good. Back to the scoop - I'll do it in point form so it is not so laborious.
The future is friendly my ass! There is absolutely nothing friendly about this particular telecom corporation, nor any of the big 3 would be my guess. I mean, was TELUS going to go bankrupt because they didn't get their two days worth of revenue from us ($1.81). Give me a break! There is absolutely no independent thinking in this kind of situation; there is no case by case analysis (and there should be given the amount of money the average individual spends on cell phones and wireless plans - it's not like they don't have the resources).
So, we sent a cheque to TELUS for $1.81, along with a letter stating that this is all the money they will be receiving from us and when the cheque is cashed it will serve as a closing of the contract and we will never hear from TELUS again. I'm not holding my breath. They have, of course, threatened us with collection and we've already started receiving the calls. Keep in mind how incredibly stupid this is - they are going to spend a bunch of money trying to collect what they perceive as owed revenue - but the fact is that we only owed them $1.81 for the two days - so let them spend all the money they want on trying to collect from us. They aren't getting another frackin' penny.
Don't be fooled into thinking that the big 3 are all that are out there for wireless - do your homework, shop around, and go with a carrier that will work WITH you not just FOR your money. Better yet, save up buy a phone outright and get on a month to month - that way the slimy buggers don't get anymore money than you are willing to give them - that's the way we went with Virgin and so far, so good - no more dropped calls (and boy, did we have a ton of those with TELUS not to mention shoddy coverage areas), and no one haranguing us to spend more, get more, do more - in fact, and this is the best part, no sales calls at all (we were bombarded by TELUS).
There is no friendly future with TELUS, if you are under contract with them now - as soon as you can (although not too early 'cause that will cost you) RUN!!! Run as fast and as far as you can. If you are looking for a new carrier - AVOID TELUS!!! At all cost!!! You don't want them, you don't want anything to do with them - they will abuse you with sales calls, and have some of the worst customer service I have ever encountered. Perceive TELUS as the devil - sign up with them and you've just sold them your soul.
- July 2007 sign up with TELUS - 3 year contract so that I can get the pretty pink Razr phone (HUGE mistake - never let a phone dictate your contract).
- October/November 2007 - phone begins to crap out, turning off every time I close the damned thing
- December 2007 - finally fed up with the faulty phone I take it to local TELUS dealer - told to buy a new phone or sign a new 3 year contract - they claim absolutely no responsibility for repairing or replacing the phone that I signed the initial contract to "rent" until it was paid for (supposedly after the 3 year contract was over)
- canceling-not an option (cancelation fee insane and asinine); purchasing a new phone - not an option (hello, expensive as hell thus the reason I signed the blasted 3 year contract to begin with); only option - sign another contract
- leave the TELUS dealer with another 3 year contract and a cheap replacement phone - the only kind they say they will give me after my expensive phone crapping out - you know the phone they had me sign the 3 year contract for - new phone in no way represents what I signed the contract for but stuck
- fast forward a wee bit - some financial issues and some personal expenditure paring down needed - perhaps cancel cell phone - no problem, if I want to pay blahdiddyblahblah hundreds of dollars - only recourse drop to lowest plan $20/month - not great but semi-manageable - a little over a year on this new plan.
- December 14, 2011 - hubby and I opt to go with an alternative provider and a new HTC (oooh pretty, shiny phone - gah, fallen prey to the latest technology again - but we bought the phone outright this time - ha ha ha won't catch us)
- January 2012 - a bill arrives from TELUS - we owe them $100 plus HST for canceling the contract 2 DAYS EARLY - WTF!!!!! Apparently, the contract wasn't over until December 16th, and now they feel they are owed a pound of flesh and a pint of blood.
- actual revenue TELUS lost because we canceled the contract 2 days early - $1.81 (including HST) - this an average based on 3 months worth of bills - don't forget we were on a $20/month plan - HOW COMPLETELY RIDICULOUS IS THIS?!?!
- the gist of it - TELUS is a major corporation and no one cancels early on a major corporation because they haven't squeezed every last red cent out of your wallet yet and maybe, just maybe while you are counting the minutes until you can extract yourself from TELUS' slimy clutches, they might be able to sucker you into buying something else.

Mould in the walls
Good morning from the tiny wee tubby. :) Whew! It's been a while since I've been on here. The truth is I'm not all that proficient at this blogging stuff but I am going to try harder to get on here more often. Part of the reason for not being here since September (really almost 2 months - yikes) is that we have had some crazy goings on around the old homestead. Now, I said in my opening blog that I wouldn't write about crazy family drama, etc., and this isn't going to be a blog about all the hurts that other people have done to me and how wonderful I am at coming through it all. It's just a wee blog about things I encounter in my day-to-day that rile me up or tickle me in some way. So, although this is house/home related, there will be no angst over spousal issues or kidlet problems posted here today - mmmm, or ever - 'cause frankly, you don't want to hear it and why should you.
I have allergies. Wicked, painful and weird allergies. Most of them are to environmental stuffs like grass, weeds, feathers, dust, mould - ya know all the crap we encounter on a daily basis - but I also have MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivity). This is not a formal diagnosis, just stuff I have kept track of and realize do me harm. Besides try getting a diagnosis from any doctor for something they can't test with a petri dish or drug into submission.
For the most part I have a handle on them, the allergies that is, and can manage getting through every day life. I manage by trying to eat the stuff I should eat, and avoid the stuff I shouldn't. I clean with natural products; don't use beauty products that contain chemicals that are bad for you (whole blog coming on this later - promise) and try to get enough sleep. Lately, and I'm talking the last 6 months, I have been feeling stupendously lousy. Constant sinus issues, achy joints, painful skin. Almost flu like issues. I have had ZERO energy and no appetite. Now before you step in to tell me that these all sound like physical symptoms of depression let me tell you, I've thought of that. But here's the thing: mentally, emotionally I'm on solid ground. I love my life, my husband, my kid. Nope, not fully employed yet but I do work part-time at a fabulous little gallery in downtown Cambridge (Gallery M - check them out), so all-in-all I'm pretty happy. Life isn't perfect but then again it wouldn't be an adventure if it was. But I'm getting off track.
So, like I said, I generally have a handle on all the bad stuff that could make me sick. But lately illness abounds in my bod. My migraines are worse - I get them when it rains but lately they have kept me bedridden more often and last much longer. And, as I said above, I feel like I have the flu - ALL THE TIME. This, as you can imagine, does not make me happy.
Surprisingly, a week or so ago the cause of all this sickness presented itself to us. The hubby and I were doing a "big clean" and trying to organize stuff to take to my parents' basement (we live in 600 sq ft., and there isn't a lot of room for extra stuff). We moved in about 6 months ago and we keep taking stuff to my parents' because there just isn't room here. The hubs started to put stuff on our bed to pack (and consequently vacuum the carpet) and there it was . . . MOULD. A large amount of very gross, black mould. He called me to see and I flipped out. No friggin' wonder I have felt like crapola since we moved into this place - I'm allergic to mould - and even if I wasn't, the stuff we found is bad stuff - the stuff that can make anyone sick if exposed to it for an extended period - Stachybotrys chartarum. This grossness was at least 2 inches high on the wall from the carpet and 6 inches in one corner. So, we started pulling everything away from the walls (including our bed where the headboard sits against the wall) and discovered that whole wall behind our headboard also had mould along the baseboard and carpet. HOLY CRAP! To top it all off I found more of the stuff in the kidlet's bedroom. Not as much as in our bedroom but enough to make me somewhat angry.
We emailed the landlord and let him know. The hubby cleaned off the mould with vinegar and borax, and I have been treating the area with tea tree oil because the other anti-mould stuff would cause me even more sickness. Besides tea tree oil, although smelly, is a natural anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal - good stuff. Two days later the landlord comes to see. Well, of course there is nothing to see because we certainly weren't going to leave it there for him to acknowledge. He brought mould remover and mould preventing paint - which I told him was going to be completely ineffective because the mould was in the walls (due to the fact the roof leaked and had yet to be repaired). We had a discussion about the issue he was having because of city expansions and why he wasn't going to tear out the wall to fix the issue (which apparently made itself known 2 years prior but he put in a second vent to fix). He said he understood and had no issue with us breaking our lease when we found a new place - duh. Anyway, long story short - we're moving. Again. Which sucks but staying here would suck infinitely more.
Upside - we believe we have found a place. Somewhere that will allow us each our own space; has storage space; a newly renovated, and cabinet rich kitchen; a soaker tub, and a lovely back yard with a pergola. And best of all, recently inspected and certified mould free. :)

Shopping and mall food.
My mother has been taking my daughter shopping for all her school clothes and supplies. Until today I have escaped this outing but since I was home this weekend (and not in North Bay working on the house with my Dad), we decided it would be nice for all of us to go out together. And it was.
It was really nice to spend time with my Mom and to see my little girl bomb around the mall looking at things she likes and expressing her opinion about things she doesn't. She's an independent one that one and she really knows her own mind. *sigh* She's growing up quickly.
We hit some stores, found some stuff and then decided to stop for lunch. Now, I'm not really a fast food person anymore. I used to be - it was easy, quick and cheap - but I've gotten away from putting that stuff into my body. However, when you are in the mall, have just spent 2 hours shopping, are hungry and really just want to sit somewhere for a minute there aren't many choices. So, off we headed to the food court.
Mom went to Feta & Olives and got herself what looked like a really yummy pita - and it was good. She said it was good anyway. I took a look around and spied Tandori - the Indian food place. I love Indian food - the smell, the colours, the taste, even that little zesty kick some of the curry has - all of it appeals to me. I stepped into line and perused the menu. They have a number of appetizing options but the one that caught me had a good price as well. For $5 I got a Tandori Rice Bowl - a good helping of basmati rice and my choice of curry to top it. Sounded like a good deal and the smells coming from behind the counter were teasing me. I ordered the bowl with butter chicken - seemed like a safe bet. I mean it's butter chicken. I've cooked it from scratch at home and know that while time consuming, it's a pretty sure thing. I also added a bottle of water and a samosa (mmmm samosa) for a total of just under $9.
Carrying my yummy prize back to our table, I opened the styrofoam container (tsk, tsk - not very green) and was disappointed immediately. Some of the chicken was so dark it was instantly unappealing. I'm not a dark meat fan but when it's dark enough to see under all the sauce - it's too dark. Dark meat is good for soups, stuffing pasta and even the occasional casserole but I think white meat would have been the better choice in this particular dish. The rice was cooked perfectly - not mushy, not crunchy. But the butter chicken sauce was watery and bland at best. Not what I look for in Indian food. As for the samosa, the thing I was hoping would renew my opinion of this particular restaurant chain was also quite disappointing. It was luke warm and everything inside it was dried out. Ewww. Not even the tamarind sauce could revive it. I probably should have taken it all back and gotten a refund but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Into the garbage it went and we continued on with our shopping.
All in all - Tandori was an extremely disappointing experience and one I will not repeat any time soon. The upside - the lady behind the counter was pleasant and polite - one thing, at least, the Tandori has in its favour.
Best of all, I spent time with two people I love very much.

The things they say they are, but aren't.
Greetings, from my tiny wee tubby. No worries I won't electrocute myself. I've got this blogging while in the bath thing figured out. The hard part is coming up with things to say. But tonight I've got a bone to pick with labels. Yep, that's right - labels. And the things they claim to be but aren't, or claim to contain (or not) and don't.
A little background about all of this. I have some weird allergies. Stuff that makes my skin itchy, makes me feel icky and well, generally interferes with my well being. Some of that stuff is found in products we use every day and it has been a real challenge trying to find other things to use that don't contain these products. I've blogged about this before - it was on another blog site and I will likely post something similar here just in case you didn't get to read it before. But the biggest, baddest thing I need to avoid is SLS (sodium laureth sulfate). This particular ingredient is in body wash, shampoo, conditioner, laundry detergent, dish soap and toothpaste. And it is particularly nasty stuff. And to find out the scoop on this bubbly, nasty additive you can read all about it here because David Suzuki lays it out in plain English.
My issue is actually two-fold. The first being that some of the things that are in the products we use every day are toxic to us and, because there is no real regulation on these items (particularly in beauty products) they are used with abandon. The second is that some of the products we use to get away from all the harsh chemicals that are added to these particular products claim to be something they are not. How was that? Clear as mud, right. Let me put it this way.
There is a huge push to be green right now and to move away from petroleum products, toxins and move toward natural and organic. At least there is for me, primarily because of my allergies, and you almost have to assume there is a push toward the natural and organic because nearly every huge brand name has come up with some green/organic/natural alternative to the products they already have on the market. The problem is what they claim to contain and what they actually contain don't mesh. And to top it all off it is the consumers responsibility to be chemists so that we can determine what is harmful and what is not. The government and the watchdogs that are supposed to regulate these things - don't.
So what is a buyer to do. Well, I guess - be informed. Understand what it is that you are putting in and on your body. Our skin is our largest organ and everything we put on it or use to clean it is absorbed into our skin and sent directly to our bloodstream. This of course means that all that nasty stuff they put into our shampoos, body washes and make up to make us smell, look and feel pretty is actually poisoning our bodies from the outside in. Add to that all the additives and other preservatives they put into our food and we have a nice little toxic cocktail roaming around our bodies. Is it any wonder that allergies and other illness, like cancer, are on the rise? Mmmmm, not so much.
I try to shop in a simple way - if I can't pronounce it or I have no idea what it is - it doesn't go on or in. Period. Which of course is easier said then done because labels can be so deceiving. Not following? Don't believe me? Check it out for yourself. CBC's Marketplace did a segment on it - Lousy Labels. I thought I was an informed consumer but I had a few OMG moments when I watched. Maybe you will too.
Blowing non-toxic bubbles your way. Night nite.

Beginning Again
So here I am again. Another blog, another blog site. And while the name may seem familiar to some - what is written will change. But it will all still be written from my bath tub because, frankly, that's where I am most relaxed and where I tend to do my best thinking. :)
It's going to be about life - my life and the things I encounter in it. Now this is not going to be me harping about how much my life sucks or my relationship issues with my kid or my husband because really who wants to read that. It simply going to be about the people and things I encounter as I go about my day to day. Essentially, things will fall into 3 categories: Reviews (could be art, galleries, movies - whatever), Raves - things that I LOVE and want to share with you; and finally, Rants - the stuff that just ticks me off - people, products, places or anything else that makes me want to pull out my hair and run screaming through my itty bitty rooms.
And that, as they say is that. I hope that you will read along and enjoy. Please bear with me. It is a new blog format for me and I'm going to be playing a wee bit - perhaps I'll have something to say about the user-friendliness of it all. Perhaps.

Perhaps.
